Sarah Barracuda

Sarah Palin quit. She just left. It's like if you were a contractor who hired someone to work on the roof of a house and at the halfway point he said, "Hey, find another roofer. I gotta go, but don't call me a quitter, 'cause I'm not."

A part of me says, "Don't let the door hit you in the ass." But another part of me says, "You really got the short end of it, Sarah. You were analyzed up, down, sideways and with about 10 different standards." And a big part of that was because she was a woman. Look at Mitt Romney. Don't you think if he were a woman, the press would have worked like mad to figure out what-the-heck kind of name "Mitt" is? Quick: how many kids does John McCain have? I know he has Megan and a kid in Iraq, but other than that, I'm at a loss, and this guy was running for president!

So as I watch Keith (Olbermann) and Rachel (Maddow) castigate Palin, I have misgivings. I don't like Sarah as a leader or mother...I wouldn't vote for her, nor would I let her babysit my grandkids because I know she'd delegate that job to Peyton (Yes, not only do I know how many kids Sarah has, but I also know their names.) But I do feel her desperation. I feel her frustration as she tries to fit into the mold into which she isn't built to conform, despite her rugged interests like basketball, skinning moose, and shooting wolves.

I think a good part of Sarah's problem is that she's too used to doing it all herself. She doesn't have the entourage she needs to clear her path. And even then, she doesn't trust others to have her best interest at heart. I hate to sound cliche, but when you're used to doing it all yourself and being "supermom," it's hard to delegate, except to your kids. Did you notice how the "first dude" gets a free ride when it comes to the kids? Occasionally he'll put a protective hand on a shoulder, but you know the first dad's really doing a mental calculation..."How soon before I can rev up the old snowmobile?"

My opinion: Sarah's really torn between two worlds, and she hasn't made peace with either. She wants it all, but doesn't seem to know quite how to do it; nor is she comfortable asking the right people. As a matter of fact, she herself would likely tell you: "It's a woman-thing, y'all, now watch me as I wade into that river and wrestle a salmon."

My other opinion: The press needs to cut it out, and maybe we need to call them out.

POST-SCRIPT UPDATE: When I said Peyton (above), I meant Piper, the 10ish year-old. So maybe I really don't know all the names of Ms. Palin's kids. My thanks to my own daughter, Ellen, for notifying me of my mistake.

  1. Peyton? Last time I checked it was Track, Bristol, Willow, Piper, and Trig. Then there's the grandson Tripp. Peyton Palin would be intense even for her.

  2. OMG - you're right! I guess I don't know the Palin pack. (I meant Piper, the little one who had Trig in her arms the other day.)

My Like-Hate-Hate Relationship with Dave Ramsey

I cannot go to sleep in silence, so I usually have talk radio on as I drift off. Most times, the cadence of the talking head becomes the white noise I need. But sometimes I actually listen to the conversations. As much as I hope for Clark Howard, Dave Ramsey happens to be the head that's talking when I go to bed. Gradually, I became aware of his philosophies. He has many, but I'll focus on just a few: 1) Get Rid of All Debt - I really like this one. As someone who wants the points my credit card awards, or the cashback my other credit card awards, I feel like I'm always a month behind. I pay off my balance in full each month, but by then of course, I have lowered my bank account and have less to spend in the current month. I do wonder what it would feel like to pay just the bills for my current living expenses. I plan to give it a go, but I won't buy Ramsay's book or go to Financial Peace University. "Where debt is dumb, cash is king, and the paid off mortgag

The Broad

The Broad , a wonderful art museum in DTLA, is free. Before yesterday, I've been only twice since I've lived in California, both times with others. It's nice to be with friends or family but I think it short-changes one from fully exploring a museum or for that matter any space where beauty & creativity are present. So yesterday I went out on my own, using my newly-acquired Senior Metro Pass which allows me to ride the bus or train for only $.35 each way. I am unfamiliar with the downtown area, but thanks to Google Maps, I could easily figure out which way to walk once I left the train station. Guess in which direction I had to go? Answer: UP and UP! The short walk (about 5-6 blocks) included about 4 which took me waaay up a steep hill that has "hill" in its name, Bunker Hill. Nothing could have informed me how out-of-shape I was more than the fact that I needed to stop twice in that trek. Whew! There is a funicular (yes) that traverses Bunker Hill. It was f

Bringing in 2019

Personally, 2018 was a great year. My sweet little grandson was born in March, a niece in June, and a nephew in October. Those milestones alone made the year a banner one. I had the good fortune to meet new friends who I believe will be lifelong ones. I went places, saw things, drove in and around Los Angeles, and found new recipes that appease both my taste buds and my aversion to meats. Huntington Library and Gardens Craft and Folk Art Museum Descanso Gardens Museum of Natural History Rancho Los Alamitos  (Maxine, Vivi, and Glenda) To welcome in the new year, I went with a couple of friends to the Lake Shrine Self-Realization ashram where we meditated and chanted while 2018 left & 2019 arrived. It was a peaceful, quiet way for a community to come together as one in unity and peace. For sure, it was the best way to spend New Year's Eve. Lake Shrine There was much to celebrate in 2018, and a lot more to look forward to in 2019. Wishing everyo
